Make | Roberts, London |
Model | Everard rule |
1. This rule has four faces for different tasks related to
the production of alcohol and, more particularly, the imposition of duty on it. 2. Note that each of the slides has effectively a single scale, with the same marks and numbers applying to the top and bottom. This was a device that was used before the introduction of cursors. 4. The first face has a single cycle logarithm scale on the upper edge and the slide and an inverted single logarithmic scale on the lower edge. These are the equivalent of the D, C, and DI scales on a modern rule. The gauge points are: MB - malt bushel, A - Ale gallon, MD - malt depth. 5. The second face is for the calculation of the content of barrels lying on their side (Seg Ly). 6. The third face has a half length logarithmic scale at the top and bottom edge, covering between them one cycle and the slide has a single cycle logarithmic scale. The gauge marks are:WG - Wine gallon, AG - Ale gallon, W - wine gallon, C - circumference, MS - malt square, MR - malt round. Before 1824 the sizes of the gallons for ale and wine were different. 7. The final face is for the calculation of the content of barrels standing on one end (Seg St). 8. For information on how such rules were used see here. This rule is from the collection of M Taylor. |
